President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers met with members of the Council of Foreign Investors today to discuss Latvia’s macroeconomic situation and developments therein. His guests told the President about their views as to tax policies.
They offered a set of proposals related to a stable and foreseeable tax system, to ways of encouraging transparency in state spending, to means for ensuring stricter collection of taxes, and to ways of promoting dialogue with the public on these matters.
The President said that the economic recovery plan that has been implemented over the last year-and-a-half has yielded positive results, even though economic development forecasts must be treated very cautiously. “This is, however, the right time to make new investments in this country,” the President said. The representatives of the council, for their part, agreed that there have been substantial improvements in Latvia’s economy since 2009, also agreeing that there has been positive dialogue with the government.
President Zatlers actively pursues dialogue with businesspeople in Latvia to hear their views about economic trends and processes in the country. On May 27, he also met with representatives of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to talk about a business plan that it has prepared. Over the last few months, the President has met with representatives of approximately 15 different sectors of the economy. Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis attended the most recent of these meetings. The next one is scheduled for June 18.
