Minister of Defence meets ISAF Regional Commands leaders

On August 12, 2010 Latvian Minister of Defence Imants Liegis during his working visit in Afghanistan met ISAF Regional Command North and Regional Command East leaders to discuss the contribution of Latvian soldiers to NATO mission as well as to confer about the future challenges.

During the meeting with Regional Command North leaders Latvian Minister of Defence emphasized the successful participation of Latvian soldiers in Norwegian led Provincial Reconstruction Team. He confirmed that Latvia plans the further participation in securing safety in Afghanistan together with Norwegian contingent.

Regional Command North leader informed minister about the safety situation in the Northern provinces. He emphasized that there are different safety levels. – Our civil experts and soldiers face both quite peaceful regions with developed infrastructure and places with armed opposition to Afghan government. There are rebels out creating the shadow cabinet, – Colonel said. Minister of Defence emphasized that it is extremely important to provide Latvian soldiers with armoured vehicles and other military technique in order to increase their safety guarantees and ability to neutralize the rebel activities.

Minister of Defence informed Regional Command East Colonel Johnston that it is set for Latvian Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) unit to complete the mission in Kunar province and to move to Regional Command North. – Together with soldiers from the Michigan National Guard we have done a great job by training Afghan militaries during two years. Our targets will be reached by December and we will consign the Afghan unit to the allied forces for further service, – said the minister.

They also discussed about the civil – military cooperation programs and the help to be offered to the local society through infrastructure and charity projects.
