On January 11, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Teikmanis, met with the new Ambassador of Italy to Latvia, Giovanni Polizzi. Both parties spoke highly of bilateral cooperation. The Secretary of State noted that Latvia was interested in enhancing cooperation with Italy, notably in view of Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2015, when Latvia will take over the function from Italy. During the meeting, Teikmanis expressed gratitude for the contribution by the Italian Embassy to providing Italian language courses for Latvian diplomats.
The Secretary of State and Ambassador exchanged opinions on the current economic situation in the European Union Member States, and Teikmanis accentuated Latvia’s support for a more rigorous fiscal discipline.
H.E. Giovanni Polizzi succeeded the former Italian Ambassador Francesco Puccio and was accredited on October 25, 2011. Polizzi has been a career diplomat since 1974.
