Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and Minister for Foreign Affairs Aivis Ronis are in a quandary and concerned over the decision of 29 June of the Administrative District Court to annul the decision of the Riga City Council not to allow to commemorate on 1 July at the Freedom Monument the Riga liberation from the USSR in 1941 and entrance of the troops of the Nazi Germany into the capital.
The Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister consider that law enforcement bodies of Latvia have to do everything not to allow the desecration of the memory of World War Two victims and the justification of the destruction of our state and citizens. “Nazism has no justification; its crimes against humanity are painful still today. The propaganda of Hitler’s and Stalin’s views is humiliating to our people and state. The government of Latvia respects court independence and human rights granted in the Constitution; however, the freedom of speech cannot be related to propaganda of Nazism.
Provocateurs and collaborationists must always receive adequate punishment. We are certain that all political parties of Latvia also support this position.” Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis note in a joint announcement.
