On Monday, July 12, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis met Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Germany Ilse Aigner and discussed the common agricultural policy of the European Union (EU) after 2013 as the most important issue, particularly emphasizing the need to review the direct payment system.
V.Dombrovskis noted that with regard to the common agricultural policy after 2013, the alignment of direct payments between the so-called old and new EU Member States is important for Latvia. I.Aigner acknowledged that the direct payment system should be made simpler and fairer, thus increasing the competitiveness of all Member States of the EU.
V.Dombrovskis and I.Aigner also discussed the use of renewable resources. The Prime Minister and the minister were of the same opinion that the use of renewable resources will become even more important in the future and more attention shall be paid to effective use of energy resources.
During the meeting I.Aigner expressed her appreciation to V.Dombrovskis on the progress in stabilizing the national economy, noting that Latvia has made very tough but right decisions.
The discussion was also attended by Minister for Agriculture Jānis Dūklavs, who will continue the discussion on these issues with minister I.Aigner throughout the day.
